Are there any standards to ensure that ignition interlock devices are accurate and reliable?
YES, the National Highway Safety Adminstration established standards for all ignition interlock devices. Independent labortories test the ignition interlock devices to make sure they meet NHTSA's strict requirements.
What is an ignition interlock?
An ignition interlock is a device that measures BAC (Breathe Alcohol Content) and allows you to start your vehicle, if the BAC is below the set point. The device requires random running retest while the vehicle is running. The device records failed or missed tests, and it also records all test results, engine starts, and vehicle run times.
Does the device need periodic service?
Yes, the interlock is serviced at least every 60 days.
What happens if I forget my scheduled service appointment?
The service light starts flashing as a reminder several days prior to your scheduled appointment. If you miss your appointment the service light will continue flashing along with the lockout light, letting you know it is overdue. If you fail to return to a service center within this time frame, the device will enter into lockout mode.
What does the device do if I fail a breath test?
For the first failed test, the device will enter temporary lockout period for a few minutes, and for any subsquent failed BAC test the device will lockout longer. This feature allows an opportunity for the alcohol to dissipate from the mouth.
What if I use medication or mouthwash with an alcohol base?
After using the mouthwash or medication, if you do not allow sufficient time for the alcohol to dissipate from the mouth the device will record a FAIL. During our training session a caution is emphasized about the use of mouthwash and other common substances that contain alcohol.
Can the interlock turn off my engine?
No, the interlock will never turn off a running vehicle. If a retest is missed, a violation is recorded.
What if my vehicle stalls?
The device has a stall protection feature, the interlock will allow a restart without a test for two minutes.
Can someone else use my vehicle?
Yes, but anyone operating the vehicle will have to use the interlock. You are responsible for any violations recorded. We will train any other users at no additional charge.
When the device requires a random running retest will it cause me to take my eyes of the road creating a hazardous situation?
No, when the device signals for a random retest, you have up to 5 minutes to take that test. There are no buttons to push, you must only breath into the unit to complete the requested sample.
What steps are needed when my interlock equipped vehicle needs repair?
You need to contact our office at 1-800-671-8054 in the event the repair shop has questions about the interlock. You must provide documentation if the power is interrupted as the unit records all power disconnects and reconnects.
Will the unit lose any memory if the battery is disconnect?
No, the unit has a back up lithium battery to protect against data loss.
Can the device be tampered with by computer?
No, special interface connection and proprietary software is needed in order to communicate with the interlock.
If I am having problems with the interlock device, what can I do?
Call our responsive service line at 1-888-930-3001. Remote service is available.
Can someone use other air source like a balloon to mimic human breath?
No, the device has anti-circumvention techniques which cause the interlock to abort artifical breath samples.
Can I leave my vehicle running outside of a bar, drink inside and then drive away?
No, the device will randomly ask for breath tests while the vehicle is running, if a sample is not given in the time allowed, the device logs a Retest Violation.
Do you have a voluntary program?
Yes, to inquire about the voluntary program call 1-800-671-8054. We also have a program just for teenagers and their parents, check out our PAUD page for more details.
